FAQ

How do I work out what size generator I need?

A petrol generator will normally be smaller, will typically be used for prime power applications and not for standby or backup, a petrol generator will frequently be portable and can be moved from place to place easily. A diesel generator will be more economical on fuel, they can be used for prime power and backup power, and they can be portable (for the hire sector) but are frequently part of a fixed installation

What is the difference between one brand and another? Eg. Honda v Hyundai?

Some differences: A Honda will normally run more quietly than a Hyundai, the warranty on a Honda is 5 years, for a Hyundai it is typically 2 years, however, a Honda will normally cost more than a Hyundai. Some brands are perfect for occasional standby or backup applications, some (usually the more expensive) are more suited to prime power applications where the generator will run for longer periods.

Why are some generator brands more expensive?

Usually because they are built using higher quality components and therefore have a better standing in the market, are well known and trusted and have wider consumer appeal than those less well known. Sometimes the warranty is for a longer period.

Petrol frame generators can be quite noisy, Petrol inverter (Suitcase generators) are relatively quiet, diesel generators can be sound attenuated so that noise levels are reduced, however an open frame skid diesel generator can sometimes be noisy

Which generator should I use for quietness?

Invertor generators, aka portable generators tend to be the quietest generators on the market, averaging between 50-70 dba. In order to determine which quiet generator is the most suitable for your application, you must firstly decide on the amount of power you require (you can use the table below to guide you). Once you have determined the appropriate wattage, you can then compare generators with the appropriate power output, against their dba to find the quietest generator for your requirements.

Helpful Note: Honda, Hyundai and Yamaha are considered the most popular quiet generator brands for reliability and warranty.

What happens if my generator goes wrong?

If Generator Warehouse has supplied the generator and it is under warranty, we would ask you to return it to us and we would repair it under warranty without charge and return it to you. If it were not possible to return the generator we would send an engineer out to investigate and repair. If the generator fault was outside warranty cover there would be a charge to cover any costs incurred. It must also be mentioned that the cost of returning the generator for investigation under warranty is at the cost of the client.

Are there any regulations which govern diesel emissions?

Yes. Diesel generators, specifically for the rental and hire sectors, are governed by NRMM regulations.
